The Naghash Ensemble & String Orchestra

“A unique hybrid of world music and contemporary classical music.” — NAI

“East meets West and Ancient meets Modern in this spectacular collaboration between ensemble and orchestra.” — Shoghakat TV

Notes from the composer

“After writing, recording, and touring with The Naghash Ensemble’s “Songs of Exile”, I wanted to find a way for the music to be ideally expressed without any limitations. In rewriting for string orchestra what had originally been a string quartet part and then made into a piano part for the sake of the traveling ensemble, I felt liberated to expand upon the many polyrhythms and contrapuntal lines that had been in the original score.”
— John Hodian

“With the members of the ensemble playing indigenous instruments, the music retains its unique Armenian characteristics and the soloists are free to embellish spontaneously. Combining The Naghash Ensemble with a string orchestra illuminates the music’s intrinsic multifaceted qualities.” — Lubomir Herza, International Music Festival Český Krumlov

“To me, Hasmik has one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices in all of Armenia, if not the world! When I first heard her singing in the ancient temple of Garni, I was mesmerized. My determination to use this exquisite sound in a new way is what eventually gave birth to The Naghash Ensemble.” — John Hodian
